What is Heroin?

Heroin is an illicit opioid synthesized from morphine that rapidly binds to opioid receptors in the brain. Its effects include intense euphoria followed by a sense of drowsy sedation. Continuous use leads to physical dependence, manifesting as severe withdrawal symptoms—including pain, insomnia, and emotional distress—when the drug is absent. Heroin carries a high risk for overdose, as its potency and purity can vary significantly.

The drug's long-term use can cause profound damage to physical health, including organ dysfunction, immune system compromise, and heightened susceptibility to infectious diseases. Psychologically, heroin can hijack the brain's reward circuitry, making cessation exceptionally challenging without comprehensive intervention.
